How tech support scams work
In a typical tech support scam a caller claims to represent a well known company or your internet provider. They say that there is a serious problem with your computer or account and that it needs to be fixed immediately. The real goal is to get access to your device or to make you pay for fake services.
Common signs of a phone tech support scam
- The call is unexpected and very urgent.
- The caller wants you to install remote access software.
- You are asked to pay a fee for diagnostics or a subscription during the call.
- The explanation is vague and does not match how real support usually works.
How to react safely
- Refuse to install remote access tools just because of a phone call.
- Do not share passwords card numbers or other sensitive information.
- Ask for the company name and end the call if you feel pressured.
- Verify the situation using an official phone number from the company website.
Official support will not pressure you like this
Legitimate technical support normally helps only after you contact it yourself or in connection with a specific service request. It does not demand instant payment or access to your device without clear explanation.
If you already allowed remote access
Disconnect the device from the internet and contact trusted support or a local professional. Change passwords for important accounts and inform your bank if any payment details were shared. In serious cases consider reporting the incident to the police.
