Why scammers use foreign numbers
Many fraud campaigns are based on calls from foreign numbers. In some cases the goal is to make you call back a premium rate line, which can be very expensive even for a short call.
Warning signs of a risky international call
- You see an unknown country code that you do not usually communicate with.
- The call rings only very briefly and no message is left.
- The calls are repeated at night or during weekends.
- You receive several calls from different but very similar numbers.
Safe reaction to unknown foreign numbers
- Do not call back just because you are curious.
- Search the number on the internet or on a who called service and read comments.
- If other users report it as a scam or premium number, block it.
Limiting calls to premium and foreign numbers
Many mobile operators allow customers to restrict calls to premium or international numbers. This can be a good preventive measure, especially for children or elderly family members.
By combining cautious behaviour, operator settings and community services you can significantly reduce the risk connected with unknown international calls.
